Both halves of Fionnlagh are ordinary Gaelic words. Fionn means fair or bright and is the same element that stands alone in Finn and sits inside Fingal. Laogh literally means calf, and the leap from calf to hero is the part to hold lightly: it is the traditional reading, on the pattern of young animals standing for young warriors, rather than something the word plainly says. The name is old enough to appear in the eleventh-century record as Findláech, mormaer of Moray — whose son is known to history and to Shakespeare as Macbeth, styled mac Bethad mac Findláich, son of Findláech.
Like most Scottish names of this age it spent centuries mainly as a surname, Finlay or Findlay, and as the clan patronymic Mac Fhionnlaigh. The surname-as-first-name wave of the 2000s brought it back the other way round, and the -ey spelling that American parents preferred was quickly picked up for daughters as well as sons. Britain kept Finlay, and kept it male. The result is a name that means one thing in Perthshire and something slightly broader in Portland, which is worth knowing before you choose it.
