History & meaning
The root ḥ-s-n is one of the most productive in the language, and it refuses to separate appearance from conduct. From it come ḥusn, beauty; ḥasanāt, good deeds; and iḥsān, a key ethical term usually translated as excellence, doing a thing beautifully because it is being done properly. Hasan is the plain adjective off that root, and the reason it works as a name is that the compliment runs in both directions at once. English has to pick: handsome, or good. Arabic does not.
English also flattens something else. Ḥasan and Ḥassān are two different Arabic names — the second an intensive form, roughly a beautifier, borne by Hassan ibn Thabit, the poet of the Prophet's community — and both usually come out as Hassan on a passport. The name's standing comes from Hasan ibn Ali, elder son of Ali and Fatima and elder grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. He became caliph on his father's death in 661 and within months made terms with Muawiya rather than continue a civil war, an abdication the sources call the year of the community. Sunni tradition honours him as a caliph and grandson of the Prophet; Shia tradition venerates him as the second Imam. In Turkey the name has been a fixture since the Seljuks, and it remains one of the most familiar names on any Turkish class register.

Hasan is a soft name in a category full of hard ones. Where most Arabic names of this rank promise strength, victory or sovereignty, this one promises that the boy will be good and will be pleasant to look at, which is a modest and rather charming thing to wish. It is also short, symmetrical, and pronounceable on sight in most European languages.

Hasan al-Basri, who died in 728, was the preacher and ascetic of Basra whose sayings run through later Sufi writing. Hasan Fathy, the Egyptian architect who died in 1989, built New Gourna in mud brick and argued the case in Architecture for the Poor. Hasan Minhaj, the American comedian, hosted Patriot Act and was a correspondent on The Daily Show.
