History & meaning
Arabic builds diminutives on a fixed pattern, and they are affectionate rather than belittling: Suhayl sits beside sahl, easy or smooth, in exactly the way Husayn sits beside Hasan. So the literal reading is little Hasan, and the reason the two names exist as a pair is domestic rather than doctrinal. Two brothers were born a year apart, the elder was named for the word meaning handsome and good, and the younger was given the tender version of his brother's name. Almost no other pair of world-famous names has that shape.
Husayn ibn Ali was the younger son of Ali and Fatima and a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. In 680 he refused allegiance to the Umayyad caliph Yazid, set out for Kufa with his family and a small following, and was surrounded and killed at Karbala in what is now Iraq. In Shia Islam he is the third Imam and Karbala is the central event of the tradition: it is mourned each year in the first ten days of Muharram, culminating on Ashura, and the visit to his shrine at Karbala forty days later, at Arbaeen, draws one of the largest annual gatherings of people anywhere in the world. Sunni Muslims honour him as the Prophet's grandson and as a martyr, and Ashura is marked in Sunni practice too, chiefly by voluntary fasting associated with a separate tradition about the deliverance of Musa. Both traditions hold the man in reverence and read the day differently.
Why parents choose it
This is not a style pick and families who use it do not treat it as one. It names a person rather than a quality, which gives it a different kind of gravity from the virtue names around it, and it carries an unmistakable statement of attachment to the Prophet's household. The sound helps: a rising second syllable and a clean n, workable in a dozen languages, with a spelling for each of them.
Middle names for Husayn

Famous Husayns
Sharif Hussein bin Ali of Mecca led the Arab Revolt of 1916 against Ottoman rule. His great-grandson Hussein bin Talal ruled Jordan as king from 1952 until his death in 1999, one of the longest reigns of the twentieth century. Hussein Chalayan, the Turkish Cypriot designer working in London, was named British Designer of the Year twice in the 1990s.
Consider instead
Hasan is the full form and the elder brother, plainer and a shade lighter. Ali is their father and the shortest of all these names. Qasim is another name from the Prophet's own household, less used and less freighted.
