Hryhoriy
Ukraine's most quoted philosopher was a barefoot teacher called Hryhoriy Skovoroda, who wrote his own epitaph: the world tried to catch me but did not catch me. The name is the Ukrainian Gregory, and Grigory is the Russian one.

History & meaning
Grēgorios means watchful, and early Christians heard in it the Gospel instruction to stay awake. It was borne by two of the greatest Eastern fathers, Gregory of Nazianzus and Gregory of Nyssa, and by the pope who sent Augustine to England, which between them made it one of the most widely borrowed names in Christendom. Ukrainian's version opens with the breathy h that stands where other Slavic languages keep a hard g, a sound change set out in full on Oleh. Hryhoriy is the Ukrainian name and Grigory the Russian one.
Hryhoriy Skovoroda (1722–1794) is why the name carries the weight it does. He trained at the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, sang in the imperial chapel, taught briefly, and then spent his last twenty-five years walking between villages with a flute and a bag of manuscripts, turning down every post offered to him. His dialogues are still argued over, his face is on the 500-hryvnia note, and the museum in his last home at Skovorodynivka was destroyed by a missile in May 2022, weeks before the tercentenary of his birth. The name belongs, too, to Hryhorii Kvitka-Osnovianenko, whose stories of the 1830s are usually called the beginning of modern Ukrainian prose.

Hryhoriy Skovoroda, philosopher and wandering teacher, is the national bearer. Hryhorii Kvitka-Osnovianenko founded Ukrainian prose fiction and co-founded the university city's literary life in Kharkiv. Hryhorii Chukhrai, born in Melitopol, directed Ballad of a Soldier (1959), one of the best-known films to come out of the Soviet thaw.
Consider instead
Taras is the other name that arrives pre-loaded with a Ukrainian writer. Mykola has the same generational depth with an easier run of consonants. Gregory is the same saint in English if the hr- is a step too far.
