Oleh
Oleh is a Viking name that has been at home in Kyiv for eleven hundred years. It began as Old Norse Helgi, holy, and arrived with the Varangian princes who built the Rus state. Ukrainian says Oleh; Russian says Oleg. The difference is a sound law, not a preference.

History & meaning
The Rus were founded by Scandinavians trading and raiding down the river routes, and their names came with them. Oleh the Wise, who according to the Primary Chronicle took Kyiv around 882 and made it the seat of the Rus, is Helgi with a Slavic ending. The chronicle also has him campaigning against Constantinople in 907 and hanging his shield on the city gates, and it kills him with a snake in the skull of his own horse, exactly as a soothsayer had promised. Treat the details as legend; the name is real enough, and unlike almost everything else in the Ukrainian repertoire it did not arrive through the church calendar.
Now the h. Somewhere around the twelfth and thirteenth centuries the inherited Slavic g weakened into a breathy voiced h across a whole band of languages: Ukrainian, Belarusian, Czech, Slovak and Upper Sorbian. Russian and Polish kept the g. Nothing about the change was selective, so it turns up wherever the old sound stood — Oleh for Oleg, Bohdan for Bogdan, Serhiy for Sergei, Ihor for Igor, Hryhoriy for Grigory, Yevhen for Yevgeny. Ordinary words went the same way: Ukrainian hora against Russian gora for mountain. When Ukrainian later needed a hard g again for loanwords, it had to add a letter for it, ґ, which Soviet orthography removed in 1933 and independent Ukraine restored in 1990.
Why parents choose it
Two syllables, a clean meaning, and a history that reaches from Norway to the Dnipro. Among Ukrainian names it is one of the least ornate, which is much of the appeal.

Famous Olehs
Oleh the Wise stands at the start of the Kyivan chronicle. Oleh Blokhin scored for Dynamo Kyiv for two decades, won the Ballon d'Or in 1975, and remains the Soviet Union's most-capped footballer. The filmmaker Oleh Sentsov, imprisoned in Russia from 2014, was released in a prisoner exchange in 2019.
