Joshua is a sentence, not an adjective. Yehoshua sets a form of the divine name beside the verb for deliverance, and the whole thing translates as "Yahweh is salvation" — a statement of faith rather than a wish for the child. The Book of Numbers records the moment it was given: Moses renames his lieutenant, Hoshea son of Nun, as Yehoshua before sending him to scout Canaan. That man went on to lead the crossing of the Jordan and the campaign that followed.
The name then split in two. In later Hebrew and Aramaic, Yehoshua contracted to Yeshua; Greek scripture rendered Yeshua as Iesous and Latin as Iesus, which English received as Jesus. Joshua is the other branch — the full Hebrew form, taken up in English only after the Reformation put the Old Testament into ordinary hands. It stayed a modest biblical choice for three centuries, then rose steeply in America from the 1970s, held the top 10 through two decades, and now sits at #66.
