History & meaning
The etymology is genuinely unsettled, and honest sources say so. The blunt reading takes Caleb straight from kelev, "dog" — which in the ancient Near East was a statement about loyalty rather than an insult, the animal that stays. The gentler reading splits the name into kal and lev, "whole" and "heart", giving "wholehearted". Scholars have not settled between them. Both arrive at the same character.
The bearer is why the name stuck. Moses sent twelve scouts into Canaan; ten came back frightened, and only Caleb and Joshua said the land could be taken. Forty years later they were the only two of their generation left to see it, and Caleb, then eighty-five, asked to be given the hardest ground in it. English Puritans took the name up in the 1600s and carried it to New England, where it thinned out over the Victorian era before returning with the late twentieth-century revival of Old Testament names.
