History & meaning
원 may be the most character-crowded syllable in the whole Korean name stock. 元 is the first or original — the head of a thing, the character in the word for a chief or director. 源 is the spring a river rises from. 願 is a wish, the sort you make deliberately. 遠 is far, 圓 is round or complete, 苑 is a garden. Each is a different name wearing the same two letters, which is why a Korean who wants to be precise about his own name will write out the characters rather than say them.
The first syllable is similarly plural: 柱 a pillar, 珠 a pearl, 宙 the vault of space, 周 a full circuit. Put any of them in front of any of the above and the result is still pronounced Juwon. This is also where the name's gender lives. Korean names are not reliably masculine or feminine by sound, and Juwon is a clear case — boys and girls both get it, with the hanja pushing gently one way or the other and fashion doing the rest. English speakers looking for a name that does not announce a sex before the child arrives will find Korean full of them.
Why parents choose it
It is soft without being slight, and it avoids the 俊 and 호 endings that make so many Korean boys' names sound alike. The pearl and pillar readings also give parents something concrete to explain later, which matters more than it sounds — a child asked what his name means should have an answer.
Middle names for Juwon
No Korean register carries a middle name, so a pairing here is an act of translation rather than tradition: Juwon Michael, Juwon Blake, Adrian Juwon, Juwon Reid. One-syllable English partners keep the emphasis on the Korean name; the middle names guide has the full method.
Famous Juwons
The actor known professionally as Joo Won — star of Ojakgyo Brothers and the original Good Doctor — was born Moon Jun-won and built his single-name stage identity out of it. Kim Joo-won, principal dancer of the Korean National Ballet for many years, holds the name on the other side of the gender line, which is a fair illustration of how it works.
Consider instead
Gunwoo keeps the rounded second syllable and reads more decisively male. Siwoo is lighter and thoroughly modern. Doyun has the same unhurried sound and a set of characters that Korean parents have not yet worn out.
