The Irish route is the busiest: Kane anglicises Ó Catháin, descendant of Cathán, where Cathán is a diminutive of cath, battle — so the root sense is something like little battler. The Ó Catháin were a Gaelic family long seated in what is now County Derry, and their name came out of the anglicising mills as Kane, Keane, Kean and O'Kane depending on which clerk was writing. The Welsh route is unrelated: cain is a Welsh adjective meaning fair, fine or beautiful, and it appears as a personal name in Welsh tradition.
