History & meaning
Old Irish named people by how they looked, and colour words did much of the work: fionn for fair, donn for brown, ciar for dark. Add the affectionate ending -án and you have Ciarán, the little dark one, presumably a boy with black hair among fairer siblings. It is a plain, physical name, and that plainness is part of why it lasted while grander compound names fell out of use.
It lasted mainly through the saints. Ciarán of Clonmacnoise founded his monastery on the banks of the Shannon in the sixth century and died within a year or so of doing it, still in his thirties; Clonmacnoise went on to become one of the great centres of learning in early medieval Ireland. A second Ciarán, of Saighir, is counted among the earliest Irish saints. When Irish names began to be written in English the accent was dropped and the C was swapped for a K to stop English readers turning it into "see", which is how Kieran came to be the spelling that travelled to Britain, Australia and America while Ciarán stayed home. A word of caution about a lookalike: Cian is a wholly separate name meaning "ancient, enduring", not a short form of this one.

Kieran solves the problem that stops a lot of parents using Irish names abroad — it looks the way it sounds. There is no gap between spelling and pronunciation to explain at every introduction, the meaning is modest rather than heroic, and the rhythm is soft in a way that most Irish boys' names are not.

Kieran Culkin won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for A Real Pain, after four seasons as Roman Roy in Succession. The Irish actor Ciarán Hinds, who uses the Irish spelling, has worked from Rome to Belfast. In sport, the England full-back Kieran Trippier and the Scotland defender Kieran Tierney have both kept the name on team sheets.
