History & meaning
Koa is one word doing two jobs. It is the adjective for brave, bold and fearless and the noun for a warrior; it is also the name of the largest tree in the Hawaiian forest. Dictionaries list the senses side by side without ranking them, and the relationship between them is not settled — whether the tree took the warrior's name for its hardness, or the warriors took the tree's. Add the singular article and you get Kekoa; add the plural and you get Nākoa. The bare word is the oldest and plainest of the three.
The timber is where the name's cultural weight actually sits. Koa grows at elevation on Hawaiʻi island, Maui and Kauaʻi, and a canoe hull was cut from a single trunk. Choosing that trunk was a religious undertaking as much as a forestry one, and the canoe-builders watched for the ʻelepaio, the small forest flycatcher held to be a form taken by Lea, the goddess of canoe makers: a bird that landed and pecked at the trunk was reading insect damage in the wood, and the tree was left standing. Paddles, spears and surfboards came from the same timber. So, later, did the ʻukulele — developed in Honolulu after 1879 from the small guitars Madeiran immigrants brought with them, and built by cabinetmakers who reached for the wood at hand. Koa remains the prized tonewood, and the tree is now a reforestation species on land cleared for cattle a century ago.
Why parents choose it
Three letters, two vowels, a meaning that covers courage and a tree at once, and no pronunciation trap beyond the second syllable. It also sidesteps the problem of martial names: a boy called Koa is named for something that grows as much as for something that fights.
