History & meaning

Of the seven Akan day-names — one for each weekday, given to every child at birth and explained in full on our Kwame page — Kwadwo is the one whose meaning goes past the calendar. Monday in Akan is Dwoada, and inside it sits dwo, a verb meaning to cool, to settle, to become peaceful. The connection is not folk etymology bolted on afterwards: Monday is understood as the quiet day, and a Kwadwo is expected to be the steady one in the room. Adwoa, the girl born on Monday, carries the same idea.

The spelling confuses English readers because Twi dw is a single palatal sound, roughly an English j. Say the name and you get KWAH-jo, which is precisely why Fante speakers write Kojo and why the Baoulé of Côte d'Ivoire write Kouadio. All three are the same Monday. The Atlantic spelling was Cudjoe, and it belongs to one of the most consequential figures in Jamaican history: Captain Cudjoe, the Maroon leader whose forces fought the British to a standstill in the mountains and signed the treaty of 1739 that secured Maroon land and self-government. His name is simply a Monday birth, written down by a clerk who had never heard Twi.

Why parents choose it

Ghanaian parents do not choose it; Monday does. Families abroad who want the day-name but not the spelling lesson tend to register Kojo, which is the same name and arrives at the right pronunciation without help.

Consider instead

For a different day in the same system, Kwabena is Tuesday and Kofi is Friday. If it is the calm you are after rather than the calendar, the Sotho name Thabo means joy and is just as easy to say.
