History & meaning

It is the Hong Kong romanisation of Cantonese 關, a surname carried by the Three Kingdoms general Guan Yu, later deified and worshipped in temples across southern China and the diaspora. It is also how English writing has long handled 觀, the character in Kwan Yin, the bodhisattva known in Mandarin as Guanyin, whose name means something like "perceiving the sounds of the world". Those two characters share nothing but a sound.
Korean adds a second layer.
