History & meaning
Sunday opens the Akan week and Kwasi opens the set of day-names, the seven-name system in which every Akan child is named for the weekday of their birth. Kwasiada gives Kwasi for a boy and Akosua for a girl, and the day itself carries a reputation: Sunday-born people are traditionally described as protective, watchful, drawn to leadership, and Sunday is associated with the fullness of creation. Coastal Fante speakers say Kwesi, Twi speakers say Kwasi, and across the border in Côte d'Ivoire the Baoulé write it Kouassi. The three are one name with three passports.
Kwasi has the most complicated afterlife of the seven. Akan day-names appear all over the records of Atlantic slavery, and Quashee — sometimes Quashie or Quashy — was the English spelling of this one. It was so common in Jamaica and the Carolinas that nineteenth-century colonial writers turned it into a generic term for a Black man; Thomas Carlyle used it that way in an infamous 1849 essay. That misuse says nothing about the name and a great deal about the people who did it. Quashie survives today as an ordinary surname in Ghana and across the Caribbean, and in Ghana the given name never wavered at all.
Why parents choose it
For Ghanaian families it is not a choice, it is a fact of the birth certificate. For everyone else Kwasi offers something unusual: a name that is completely at home in English phonetics, easy to say, and rooted in a living system rather than a dictionary gloss.

Kwasi Wiredu, who died in 2022, was one of the founding figures of modern African philosophy and spent much of his career arguing that African thought should be done in African languages. Kwasi Kwarteng, the historian and Conservative MP, was Chancellor of the Exchequer in 2022. Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, using the Fante spelling, served as Vice-President of Ghana from 2012 to 2017.
