History & meaning
Three morphemes, one indicative sentence. Nna is father, m is the possessive "my", and dị is the verb of being and living. What makes the name interesting is who is speaking. In most cases the child is the one saying it, and the father in question is not the man in the delivery room — it is the grandfather who has died, understood under ịlọ ụwa, "returning to the world", to have come back into the line. Igbo tradition treats that return as continuity rather than as a second life for the same person; the family greets the boy as the elder come home, and the name announces it in the present tense.
Then there is Zik. Benjamin Nnamdi Azikiwe (1904–1996) founded the West African Pilot in 1937, pushed the independence campaign through journalism as much as politics, served as Governor-General from 1960 and became Nigeria's first president in 1963. The University of Nigeria at Nsukka was his project; Abuja's international airport carries his name. Because it is specific. Most name meanings are adjectives; this one names a person, usually a real grandfather the parents can point to, which is a rarer thing for a name to do.
