History & meaning
Lyle began as a description of where a family lived. Anglo-Norman scribes wrote de l’isle, "of the island", and Latin documents render the same families as de Insula; Scottish records carry both from the twelfth century onward, and over time the phrase collapsed into the single word Lyle. The island in question was rarely dramatic. In Norman usage an isle could be any patch of solid ground surrounded by water or wet ground, so most Lyles descend from someone whose farm sat in a river bend.
The surname crossed into first-name use during the nineteenth-century American habit of promoting family surnames to the front of the name — the same habit that gave the country Clark and Dean. Lyle held a comfortable place on American birth certificates through the 1920s and 1930s, then faded with the rest of that generation of one-syllable men. It has begun to reappear in the company of Otis, Hank and Glenn, carried by the same parents who like a name their grandfather might have answered to.
