History & meaning
Matthew and Mark list an apostle called Thaddaeus; Luke and Acts put Jude son of James in the same slot. The Church resolved the discrepancy by making them one man, Jude Thaddaeus, patron of hopeless cases, and the byname stuck to him. What it meant is another matter. The traditional gloss runs through an Aramaic root for the breast and reaches "heart" or "courageous heart", and you will see that printed everywhere, but it is a reconstruction rather than a reading; other scholars take Thaddaios for a Greek-shaped pet form of some longer Semitic name. Honest answer: nobody knows, and any page that states the meaning flatly is overselling. Polish took the Latin Thaddaeus and gave it the classical -eusz ending it shares with Mateusz.
Then a soldier made it Polish twice over. Andrzej Tadeusz Bonawentura Kościuszko trained as a military engineer, sailed to America in 1776, fortified Saratoga and West Point, and was commissioned brigadier general by Congress. He went home, led the 1794 uprising against Russia and Prussia, and was wounded and captured at Maciejowice. His American will directed that his back pay buy the freedom and education of enslaved people, with Jefferson as executor; it was never carried out. Mount Kosciuszko in Australia, the Kosciuszko Bridge in New York and a county in Indiana all carry his name. Forty years later Mickiewicz published Pan Tadeusz, and between the general and the poem the name became a Polish institution.
