Mikha'el is a sentence with a question mark. Who is like God? The expected answer is nobody, and in the Book of Daniel the name belongs to the prince who stands guard over Israel, while Revelation puts him at the head of the armies that throw down the dragon. That combination — a warrior who is also a protector, and a name that refuses idolatry in three syllables — made Michael one of the great Christian names. Latin kept Michael; Spanish reshaped it into Miguel, hardening the ch to a k sound and writing it gu so the g would stay hard before an e.
Mexico's most consequential Miguel is Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, the parish priest whose call to arms in 1810 began the war of independence, and his name demonstrates the system every Mexican is registered under. Two surnames, always: the father's first surname, then the mother's. Hidalgo came from his father, Costilla from his mother, and the y joining them is an older formal usage that now survives mainly in historical names. A woman keeps her own two surnames at marriage, so the maternal line stays legible for a generation, and the first of the pair — not the last — is the one used in address. American forms get this wrong constantly, filing a Miguel Ángel Fernández Ruiz under Ruiz when he is Señor Fernández.
