History & meaning
Break it apart and you get three words, not one: ndụ, life; bụ, the copula; isi, head. Isi is the same word that names the head on your shoulders and the head of a household, so the sentence reads "life is the head of all things" — the thing everything else hangs off. Igbo has a whole shelf of names that make this comparison explicit. Nduka says life is greater; Ndukaku finishes the thought by naming what it is greater than, which is wealth. Ndubuisi is the version that does not bother to specify, because nothing on the list wins.
Names like this are chosen at the naming ceremony, held in the first weeks, and they are usually a report on what the family has just been through. A run of infant deaths, a birth that nearly went wrong, a father who came home from something he was not expected to come home from — the next child gets the sentence. It also runs the other way: parents who have just come into money sometimes give it as a corrective. The orthography is worth a note, because you will see the name spelled several ways. Standard Igbo marks a second set of vowels with a dot below the letter — ị, ọ, ụ — and English paperwork drops the dots, which is how Ndụbụisi becomes Ndubuisi on one passport and Ndubisi on the next. Famous Ndubuisis
Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu (1943–2021) governed Imo and then Lagos State under military rule in the late 1970s and spent his later years in the pro-democracy opposition; a park in Ikeja carries his name. Ndubuisi Egbo, a former Nigeria goalkeeper, became the first African coach to win a European top-flight title when he took KF Tirana to the Albanian championship in 2020.
