History & meaning
Break Chidi in two and you get chi and dị, the Igbo verb "to be, to exist". The name is a flat declarative sentence: God exists. What makes it worth a longer look is the first half. Chi is not a borrowed word for the Christian God dropped into Igbo. It is an older and stranger idea: the personal spiritual principle every individual carries, a kind of divine counterpart that holds that person's destiny and negotiates it with them. Everyone has their own chi. The supreme being sits at the top of the same vocabulary — Chukwu is chi ukwu, "the great chi", and Chineke is the chi that creates. So a Christian Igbo family naming a son Chidi is speaking through a religious grammar that long predates the missionaries, and the word does double duty without anyone finding it awkward.
Chinua Achebe set this out in his essay "Chi in Igbo Cosmology" (collected in Morning Yet on Creation Day, 1975), arguing that chi is central to Igbo psychology and that the way into it runs through proverbs and personal names rather than doctrine. The proverb he keeps returning to appears in Things Fall Apart: when a man says yes, his chi says yes also. Read one way it makes destiny obedient to the will; read the other way it makes the chi's assent the thing that decides. That unresolved double meaning is exactly why the element is so productive in names. If every event can be referred to a person's chi, then almost any statement about life can be turned into a name — Chibueze, Chigozie, Chinedu, Kelechi, Chukwuemeka. Chidi is the shortest and plainest of them, which is why it also serves as the call-name for the long ones.
Why parents choose it
Two syllables, five letters, no silent anything: Chidi survives a school register in London or Houston with its pronunciation and its meaning intact, which is more than most Igbo names manage abroad. It is also the least ornate way of saying the thing the whole naming tradition is built to say.

Chidi Odiah spent nine seasons at CSKA Moscow and played right-back for Nigeria's Super Eagles. Chidi Ahanotu, an American of Igbo parentage, played twelve NFL seasons at defensive end, nine for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The sprinter Chidi Imoh ran for Nigeria in world-class 100-metre fields through the 1980s. Television added a fictional bearer with a real footprint: Chidi Anagonye, the anxious moral philosopher of The Good Place.
