History & meaning
Igbo runs the same metaphor English does, and takes it further. Obi is the heart in the chest. It is also the obi proper: the building at the centre of a walled family compound where the head of the household sleeps, keeps his shrine and receives whoever comes to the gate. Readers of Chinua Achebe will have walked into one — Okonkwo's obi is where half of Things Fall Apart happens. So a compound has a heart in the architectural sense, and the word for the organ does duty for the room. That double life is why Obi turns up at the front of so many names: an Igbo speaker hearing Obinna or Obiora hears both the affection and the household.
There is a third sense that matters. Most Igbo communities historically had no monarch, but Onitsha and the Anioma towns did, and their ruler's title is Obi — the man who is the heart of the town. The reigning Obi of Onitsha, Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, has held the throne since 2002. None of this makes the given name royal, but it does mean the word carries an unmistakable weight of centrality wherever it appears. Worth saying plainly: Obi is not a clipping that someone tidied up for export. And no, the Star Wars connection is a coincidence — Obi-Wan Kenobi's name has no Igbo etymology.
Consider instead
