History & meaning
The first half is the same obi that heads Obinna, though here it leans towards its other sense: not affection but mind, intention, the seat of judgement. The second half is where the name gets specific. Ọra is how the central and southern dialects say ọha, and Igbo is enough of a dialect continuum that the same morpheme surfaces both ways within a hundred miles; standard Igbo, built largely on the Owerri and Umuahia varieties, keeps both in circulation. Ọha is not "people" in the loose sense of a crowd. It is the assembled adults of a town, the body that debates and whose agreement makes a ruling binding. You can still hear it in Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the pan-Igbo cultural union, whose name joins ọha to eze, king.
Which is what makes Obiora a political name in the oldest sense. Most Igbo communities historically ran without a monarch — "Igbo enwe eze", the Igbo have no king, is the saying usually quoted for it — and decisions belonged to the assembly, the age grades and the titled men rather than to a throne. Why parents choose it
Families choose it for a child they hope will be a convener — the one who holds the room together. It also has a pleasant shape in English, four open syllables with no consonant cluster anywhere, and it comes with the ready-made Obi for daily use.
Middle names for Obiora

Famous Obioras
Obiora Udechukwu, painter and poet of the Nsukka school, spent decades drawing on uli body-and-wall design and later taught at St. Lawrence University in New York. Obiora Chinedu Okafor, the Nigerian-Canadian international lawyer, served as the United Nations independent expert on human rights and international solidarity.
Consider instead
