Patxi is a nickname that stopped being one. It is the Basque familiar form of Frantzisko — Francisco, Francis — standing in the same relation to the full name as Paco does in Spanish or Frank in English, except that in the Basque Country it long ago became the name people are actually registered under.
Two things repay knowing. The first is the spelling. In Basque, tx is the sound English writes as ch, so Patxi is "PAH-chee", and the same digraph gives Txomin and the affectionate ending -txo. Basque makes words warmer by pushing consonants forward in the mouth — s becomes x, t becomes tx — which is exactly how a Frantzisko turns into a Patxi. The second is the saint. Francis is not a Christian name in origin at all: Franciscus is Latin for "the Frenchman", a nickname the cloth merchant Pietro di Bernardone gave the son he had baptised Giovanni, and that boy grew up to be Francis of Assisi. Patxi is therefore a Basque nickname for a Latin nickname. The other Francis in the story is closer to home — Francis Xavier was a Basque-speaking Navarrese, and his family castle gave the world Xabier.
