History & meaning
Xabier is not a word for a person. It is a house. The castle of Xabier stands in eastern Navarre, and its name comes from Basque etxe berri, "the new house", by way of the local forms Etxaberri and Exabierre. For centuries it was a place, and then a family surname, and nothing else.
One man changed that. Francisco de Jasso y Azpilicueta was born in the castle in 1506, a Basque speaker from a Navarrese noble family; he met Íñigo of Loyola in Paris, helped found the Society of Jesus, and sailed east, preaching in Goa, the Moluccas and Japan before dying in 1552 on an island off the coast of Guangdong while waiting for passage into China. The world knows him as Francis Xavier, and through him a Navarrese farmhouse name became a given name in Manila, Mumbai, Milan and Milwaukee. Basque spells it with an x because in Basque x is the sound English writes as sh — which is why the name is "shah-BYEHR", and why Xabi is the short form. Spanish respelled it Javier and English Xavier, both of them fossils of a sh sound that the Castilian jota later swallowed.
