Quincy is a place that became a family that became a first name, and every step of it is on the record. The places are Norman: villages named for a Gallo-Roman landowner called Quintius, whose estate took his name with the suffix -acum attached. Note the root — quintus, fifth, the same Latin numeral that stands behind Quentin, though the two names arrive by completely different routes. The family came to England after the Conquest, and Saer de Quincy, Earl of Winchester, was one of the twenty-five barons appointed to enforce Magna Carta in 1215.
The American chain is the better story. Colonial Massachusetts had a Quincy family of some weight, and Colonel John Quincy of Braintree spent years as speaker of the provincial assembly. His granddaughter Abigail married John Adams, and when she gave birth in July 1767 the old man was dying — he died two days later — so the baby was named for him. That is where John Quincy Adams got the name, and it is why Braintree's north precinct was set off in 1792 and called Quincy. Every American Quincy since, including the one who produced Thriller, is downstream of a Norman farm.
