Veer is the clearest example on this site of a rule that shapes hundreds of Indian names: Hindi does not pronounce the final short a of a Sanskrit word. Vīra therefore becomes Veer, rāma becomes Ram, ākāśa becomes Akash and vikrama becomes Vikram. The name is not a shortening or a modernisation of vīra; it is simply what that word is in the living language, while Sanskrit recitation keeps the older form.
The word itself is very old indeed. Vīra descends from the Indo-European root for man in the sense of warrior, and its relatives include Latin vir, from which English gets virile and virtue, and Old English wer, which survives in werewolf. Within India the word does heavy public work. India's three wartime gallantry awards are the Param Vir Chakra, the Maha Vir Chakra and the Vir Chakra. Mahāvīra, great hero, is the title by which Jains know Vardhamana, the twenty-fourth tirthankara. And in Punjabi veer or veerji is the everyday word for brother, so a Punjabi speaker hears warmth in the name where a Sanskritist hears the battlefield.
