Rashid
Rashid means rightly guided. It is the participle behind the Rashidun, the four caliphs Sunni tradition calls the Rightly Guided, and behind Ibn Rushd, the philosopher Latin Europe knew as Averroes.

History & meaning
The Arabic root r-sh-d covers right guidance and the good sense that comes with growing up, and it is still doing both jobs in modern usage. Rushd is the noun; sinn ar-rushd is the legal age of majority in Arab civil codes, the age at which a person's judgement is presumed sound. The twelfth-century philosopher Ibn Rushd, whose commentaries on Aristotle reached Paris under the name Averroes, was literally a son of that word. Grammatically the name is rāshid, one who is rightly guided, which is what the Rashidun caliphs are called as a group; the divine attribute is the intensive rashīd, one who guides others right. English writes both as Rashid, so the page you are on covers both.
Ar-Rashid is accordingly one of the ninety-nine names of God, and boys are named Rashid anyway, in every generation since the seventh century. Being rightly guided is something a person can hope to be, so the attribute belongs to people as well. For the divine name itself Arabic supplies the servant construction: Abd ar-Rashid, servant of the Guide, in the same pattern as Abdul Karim, servant of the Generous. Not every attribute works that way. Rahman and Rahim stay locked inside the compound, appearing only as Abd al-Rahman and Abd al-Rahim, because the mercy they name is not something a human being dispenses.
Why parents choose it
It is a wish for a steady adult rather than a spectacular one, and that is unusual among names, which mostly promise courage or beauty. It also carries history lightly: the caliph, the philosopher and the ruler who built modern Dubai all answer to it without the name feeling grand.

Rashid Khalidi taught Middle Eastern history at Columbia for two decades. The Algerian-French singer Rachid Taha, who died in 2018, took the North African spelling to European rock audiences.
