History & meaning
England has several villages called Stanley — in Derbyshire, Durham, Staffordshire and the West Riding among others — and every one of them is the same two Old English words: a clearing full of stones. Families who moved away were named for where they came from, which is how a description of poor farmland became a surname. The Stanleys of Lancashire made it a great one, holding the earldom of Derby since 1485; by tradition it was Thomas Stanley who decided Bosworth Field by switching sides and placed the crown on Henry Tudor’s head.
First-name use is Victorian. It rode the general enthusiasm for surnames as forenames, helped by Henry Morton Stanley, the Welsh-born explorer who had taken the name himself, and by Lord Stanley of Preston, who as Governor General of Canada donated a certain hockey trophy in 1892. The name peaked early in the twentieth century, spent seventy years falling, and is now squarely in grandfather-revival territory — already climbing again in Britain.
Why parents choose it
Stan. That is most of it, and it is a good reason: warm, unpretentious, impossible to make pompous. The full name carries a flat-capped, hard-working sort of charm that fussier vintage revivals cannot buy. It is worth noting that Stanley is currently far more fashionable in Britain than in America, which is usually a leading indicator rather than a permanent difference.
