Most name pages will hand you a meaning for Stellan. Be sceptical of all of them. Roland Otterbjörk, whose Svenska förnamn is the standard Swedish reference work, argued for a German origin. The difficulty is immediate: Stellan is essentially unknown in Germany, which is a strange thing for a German name to be, and no German source form has been produced that the Swedish spelling obviously descends from. The other common suggestion derives it from Old Norse stilla, calm or still, and gives "calm one" as the meaning. That reading is traditional rather than demonstrated — it is repeated because it has been repeated, not because a chain of attested forms supports it.
A third idea, that Stellan is a masculine of Latin stella, is modern folk reasoning working backwards from the spelling. It gets recycled constantly in English-language name lists because it produces a pleasant meaning.
