History & meaning
The root tap means to burn, to heat, to glow, and Sanskrit built two very different words on it. One is tapana, the burner, an epithet of the sun and eventually just a word for it. The other is tapas, which means heat as well but the inner kind — the austerity an ascetic generates by discipline, and by extension spiritual power itself. A sage performing tapasya is understood to be heating himself up. Tapan therefore sits at the sunlit end of a root whose other end is entirely internal, and among Indian solar names it is the one that says what the sun actually does rather than naming the god who drives it, as Surya does, or the disc, as Ravi does.
Bengal gives every child two names, and this is the formal one. The bhālo nām, the good name, goes on the birth certificate, the school register and the passport. Beside it sits the ḍāk nām, the call-name, chosen by the household and often meaningless on purpose — Bubai, Khoka, Rana, Tuktuki, Bapi. Nobody at the office uses it and nobody in the family uses anything else. Tapan Sinha, 1924 to 2009, made some forty films in Bengali and Hindi across half a century — Kabuliwala, Sagina Mahato, Ek Doctor Ki Maut — and took the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2006. Tapan Raychaudhuri, 1926 to 2014, wrote the standard economic history of early modern Bengal and taught Indian history at Oxford for two decades.
