History & meaning
The Sanskrit is saurabha, fragrance, formed by lengthening the first vowel of surabhi, sweet-smelling — the standard Sanskrit way of turning an adjective into the abstract noun for its quality, the same operation that gives gaurava, weightiness, from guru. It is a gentle name by design, and unusually so: most Indian boys' names reach for light, victory, a god or a virtue, and very few reach for a smell.
Then there is the v, which nobody says. Bengali has no v sound at all. Where Sanskrit and Hindi have one, Bengali produces a b — Vishnu is Bishnu, Vikram is Bikram, Vijay is Bijoy, Vivek is Bibek — and the two letters have effectively collapsed together in the mouth. One knock-on effect is that b and v became interchangeable when Bengali names were first written in roman script under the Raj, and the habit stuck. So the standard English spelling of সৌরভ is Sourav, with a letter that has no counterpart in the pronunciation; the standard Hindi spelling of the identical word is Saurabh, which is much closer to what a Bengali actually says. Sourav Ganguly's own surname went through the same mill: the Bengali is Gangopadhyay.
