The Finnish word Finland exports is sisu: grit, the capacity to keep standing after there is no reason left to. Tarmo is its forward-facing neighbour. Sisu endures, tarmo pushes. It is the energy a person brings to a job rather than the toughness they need to survive one, and tarmokas, its adjective, is the word a Finnish obituary uses for somebody who never sat down. A speaker meets none of this as etymology; they meet it as an ordinary noun that happens to be attached to a boy.
