Of all the plain Finnish words given to boys, Voitto is the one that asks for the most. Onni wishes the child luck, Toivo wishes him hope, Armas simply calls him dear. Voitto sets a result. The word is voitto, a win, from the verb voittaa, to win or to beat, and there is nothing metaphorical about it: it is the word on the sports page and it is also, without any change of register, the word for the profit line in a company's accounts.
