Toby is what English speakers did to Tobias. The Hebrew original, Toviyah, means God is good; medieval England shortened the Greek-derived Tobias in ordinary speech, and by the sixteenth century Toby was appearing in parish registers as a baptismal name in its own right. That makes it one of the earliest English pet forms to be promoted to full status, centuries before the fashion for doing so became general.
Its cultural footprint is oddly domestic. Shakespeare gave Twelfth Night a Sir Toby Belch. Eighteenth-century Staffordshire potters gave the language the Toby jug. Punch and Judy shows gave the dog a Toby. Meanwhile the name itself split along national lines: Britain has treated Toby as a normal, well-liked choice for decades, while in the United States it drifted toward being either a nickname or a country-music byword rather than a name parents reached for.
