Vihaan is traditionally glossed from Sanskrit vihāna, the break of day, with the prefix vi- supplying the sense of separating or dispersing — the night coming apart. Be precise about the status of that gloss. Sanskrit has grander and far commoner words for dawn, above all uṣas, which is a goddess in the Rigveda, and prabhāta. Vihāna is a rarer word, and the dawn sense is the traditional reading rather than a famous line of scripture, so it deserves a conservative label.
Even so, that gloss is worth defending, because Vihaan sits next to names for which nothing comparable can be said. Several of the most fashionable Indian boys' names of the past two decades — Reyansh, Aarav, Vivaan — arrive with confident English translations that no Sanskrit dictionary supports; Aarav is generally credited to the actor Akshay Kumar, whose son was born in 2002, and it spread on sound rather than sense.
