History & meaning
The poet's family name was Vergilius, spelled with an e, and that is how antiquity wrote it. The i crept in during the Middle Ages and then took over completely in English and French. Two explanations get offered and neither is proved. One points to virgo, maiden: the poet was nicknamed Parthenias, the maidenly one, at Naples, apparently for a retiring temperament, and a spelling that nodded to that would have pleased medieval readers. The other points to virga, a rod or wand, and to the strange medieval afterlife in which Virgil was remembered less as a poet than as a magician. It may equally have been ordinary scribal drift. What the original Vergilius meant is genuinely unknown.
Whichever way the spelling went, the reputation carried the name. Dante made Virgil his guide through Hell and Purgatory; readers for centuries told fortunes by opening the Aeneid at random. Use as a given name in English is largely an American story, part of the nineteenth-century habit of raiding the classics that also filled the country with Homers, Horaces and Ciceros. Like Vernon, Virgil was an ordinary choice for boys born around 1900 and has been rare for decades since. Other names from that stratum are on the vintage names list.
Why parents choose it
Few names come with a better reference attached, and the sound is gentler than the reference suggests: two soft syllables, no hard edges, and Gil waiting in reserve as a short form. It reads as scholarly rather than grand, which is a difficult balance to strike.
