History & meaning
Xavi is Catalan, and that distinction matters: Catalan is a Romance language in its own right, not a dialect of Spanish, with roughly ten million speakers across Catalonia, Valencia, the Balearic Islands and Andorra, where it is the sole official language. In Catalan the letter x before a vowel is pronounced sh, so Xavier is sha-vee-EH and Xavi is SHA-vee — nothing like the Spanish Javier.
The name underneath is not Romance at all. Xavier comes from the Basque place name Etxeberria, "the new house", which named the castle where Francisco de Jasso y Azpilicueta was born in 1506. He became St Francis Xavier, co-founder of the Jesuits and missionary to India and Japan, and Catholic Europe turned his territorial byname into a first name. Catalan families then shortened it the way every language shortens its favourites.

Two syllables, a warm ending, and a spelling that looks striking in English while being completely ordinary in Barcelona.
