History & meaning
የማን yeman is one of those words that has barely moved in three thousand years. Geʽez has it, Hebrew has it as yamin, Arabic as yamīn; Benjamin is ben-yamin, son of the right hand, and the name of Yemen is traditionally traced to the same root. Across the whole family the right hand is not merely the opposite of the left. It is the strong hand, the hand that swears an oath and receives a blessing, and the position at a ruler's right is the honoured one. A child called Yemane is being placed there.
The final -e is the Geʽez linking shape, the same ending that turns a noun into "X of" in Tekle, Gebre and Kidane, which is why the word can head a compound as well as stand alone. In practice Yemane stands alone constantly: it is a thoroughly ordinary men's name in Eritrea and in Tigray, and one that Christian families in particular hear in the Creed, where the Son is seated at the right hand of the Father. The language, again, is Tigrinya rather than Amharic — the two are separate Ethio-Semitic languages that happen to share the fidel script, and the Tigrinya-speaking world straddles the Ethiopian-Eritrean border.

It is a name about position rather than quality: not "strong" but "at the strong side". Parents who want something with scriptural depth and no English baggage get both here, and the sound is soft enough that it does not have to be explained before it is liked.

Famous Yemanes
Yemane Ghebremichael, known everywhere as Yemane Baria, was the defining Eritrean singer and songwriter of his generation; he died in 1997 and his songs remain national standards. The marathon runner Yemane Tsegay won silver at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing. As with most Ethiopian and Eritrean names, the second element in each of these is a father's given name rather than an inherited surname, a system the Abebe page sets out.
