History & meaning
The verb zāda means to increase, and zayd is the bare noun of that action. It has one curiosity no other Arabic name shares: Zayd is the John Doe of Arabic grammar. Since Sibawayh in the eighth century, every syntax textbook has demonstrated its rules on the same two dummy figures, and generations of students have parsed the sentence in which Zayd strikes Amr, over and over, in every mood and case the language has. Alongside that, the name carries real history. Zayd ibn Harithah was the Prophet's freedman and adopted son, and he is named directly in the thirty-third surah, the only one of the companions to be named at all in the text. The same passage records the end of the custom by which an adopted son took his adoptive father's lineage, after which he is called Zayd ibn Harithah again. He commanded the Muslim force at Mu'tah in 629 and was killed there.
Two more bearers shaped the early community. Zayd ibn Thabit was the young scribe who wrote down revelation and later assembled the Qur'an into a single copy under Abu Bakr and then Uthman. Zayd ibn Ali, a great-grandson of Husayn, led a rising in 740 and gives his name to the Zaydi branch of Shia Islam, still the majority tradition in highland Yemen. One thing to settle before choosing: Zayn is not a spelling of this name. It comes from z-y-n and means adornment, beauty, grace. English readers see two short z-names and merge them; Arabic keeps them apart at the root.
