Arabic builds vocabulary from three-consonant roots, and z-y-n is the root of adornment: zayyana, to decorate, zīna, ornament or finery. As a name Zayn says beauty in the sense of something well made and pleasing rather than merely good-looking. It occurs most often in classical Arabic as the first half of a compound. Zayn al-Din, beauty of the faith, was borne by scholars for centuries. Zayn al-Abidin, ornament of the worshippers, is the honorific of Ali ibn al-Husayn, the great-grandson of the Prophet, revered by Shia Muslims as the fourth Imam and remembered in Sunni tradition as a jurist and transmitter of hadith. That compound spread far beyond its origin: North Africa turned it into Zine el-Abidine, which is why a president of Tunisia carried it into the late twentieth century.
Standing alone, Zayn is ordinary across the Arab world and among Muslim families elsewhere. Its arrival in English-speaking countries is recent and traceable: Zayn Malik, born in Bradford in 1993, joined One Direction in 2010 and has since released solo work under the single name Zayn. British and American registries show the name climbing from around that point. The confusion with Zaid arrived with it, since English flattens the Arabic distinction between a y and a d in the third position; in Arabic the two names look and sound clearly different and mean unrelated things.
