Artem
Artem is what a Ukrainian kindergarten register looks like today: there will be more than one. It came out of Greek Artemios, a name built on the goddess Artemis, and it reached the top of Ukrainian birth records only in the last thirty years.

History & meaning
Artemios was a Greek name meaning something like "of Artemis", and Greek writers linked it to the adjective artemēs, unharmed or in one piece, which is where the usual gloss "safe and sound" comes from. The saint who carried it east was Artemius of Antioch, a general under Constantius II who was executed under Julian in 362 and entered the Byzantine calendar. That calendar is how almost every Ukrainian name of Greek stock arrived, and Ukrainian trimmed the ending off Artemios to leave Artem, keeping the longer Artemiy in reserve for baptismal use.
What makes Artem unusual among the names on this site is that it has no medieval prince and no national poet behind it. Its fame is recent: it climbed Ukrainian registers through the 1990s and has sat near the top ever since, alongside Maksym and Danylo. Its one heavy historical association is Soviet rather than Ukrainian. The Bolshevik organiser Fedir Sergeyev went by the party name Artem, and the mining town of Bakhmut was renamed Artemivsk in his honour in 1924; the decommunisation laws gave Bakhmut its own name back in 2016.

Two syllables, no consonant clusters, and no spelling to explain in English. It is also the modern-sounding option in a repertoire full of grandfathers and grand princes, which is exactly why so many Ukrainian parents pick it.

Artem Dovbyk led the scoring charts in Spain's top division in 2023/24 with Girona and has been Ukraine's first-choice striker since. Artem Milevskyi spent a decade at Dynamo Kyiv and is remembered at home for the chipped penalty that knocked Switzerland out of the 2006 World Cup.
