A Greek wine god stands behind Denys, and a Christian martyr put him in the calendar. The Ukrainian form is Denys, with a -ys ending; Denis is the Russian and French name, not the original spelling of this one.

History & meaning
Dionysios was as common in Greece as the god was popular, and Christianity kept it because two prominent saints wore it. The first is Dionysios the Areopagite, the Athenian councillor converted by Paul's speech on the Areopagus in Acts 17; the second is St Denis, the beheaded first bishop of Paris. Byzantine usage carried the name north into the Rus church books, where Church Slavonic Dionisiy shortened in speech. Ukrainian settled on Denys, Russian on Denis. Say the Ukrainian one and you are naming the same saint in a different language, not adjusting a Russian spelling.
Denys therefore joins a small group of names that smuggle a pagan god past the church door. Artem does the same thing with Artemis, and the two are often heard in the same Ukrainian classroom, both of them modern favourites rather than inherited family names. Ukrainian gives Denys a stress on the second syllable and a final consonant that stays crisp, and forms the affectionate Denysko with the diminutive suffix that also produces Ivasyk and Petryk.
Why parents choose it
It is short, it needs no translating abroad, and it belongs to a generation rather than to a grandfather. Denys reads as contemporary Ukrainian in a way that few names with a fourth-century saint attached manage.

Denys Shmyhal led the Ukrainian government as prime minister from March 2020, through the full-scale invasion and after. Denys Monastyrsky was Ukraine's interior minister until he was killed in the helicopter crash at Brovary in January 2023. On the sports pages, Denys Harmash captained Dynamo Kyiv through the late 2010s.
