Bohdan

History & meaning
Slavic has two quite different ways of building a name. The aristocratic pattern welds two noble-sounding roots together, which is how Volodymyr, Yaroslav and Sviatoslav were made. Bohdan belongs to the other pattern: a short sentence about the child, compressed into one word. Bozhydar, God's gift, works the same way. Scholars generally read Bohdan as a deliberate translation of the Greek Theodotos or Theodoros, made when Slavs wanted a Christian sentiment in their own vocabulary rather than in someone else's.
The h is the Ukrainian signature. Where Polish and Russian have Bogdan, Ukrainian has Bohdan, because the old Slavic g softened to a breathy h in Ukrainian several centuries ago. Why parents choose it
It is short, it is stressed on the ending so it lands firmly, and its meaning needs no gloss for anyone who speaks a Slavic language. Famous Bohdans
Bohdan Khmelnytsky, christened Zynovii but known by the name he signed, led the 1648 uprising against the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and founded the Cossack Hetmanate; his equestrian statue stands on Sofiivska Square in Kyiv and his portrait is on the five-hryvnia note. Bohdan-Ihor Antonych, a Lemko poet of the 1930s, produced a body of work before dying at twenty-seven. The actor Bohdan Stupka played Khmelnytsky in the 1999 film adaptation of With Fire and Sword.
