History & meaning
Kiraṇa is one of Sanskrit's ordinary words for a ray of light, without the mythological freight that Aditya or Surya carry. It is the beam rather than the source, which is a small distinction that shapes how the name feels: something arriving rather than something burning. Lexicons also record kiraṇa in the sense of dust, and the likeliest bridge between the two is the shaft of sunlight through a doorway with the motes turning in it — though that is a reasonable guess about an old semantic split rather than an established derivation, and it is worth labelling as one.
The interesting fact about Kiran is grammatical. Most Indian names announce their sex through the ending: an -a or -i for daughters, an -an, -esh, -it or -av for sons. Kiran does not, because Hindi dropped the final vowel of Sanskrit kiraṇa and left a bare consonant that signals nothing. So the name went to everyone, and it stayed there — India's first woman police officer and one of the country's best-known cricket wicketkeepers have carried the identical name for eighty years without anybody finding it strange. The only comparable family is the Punjabi compounds, Gurpreet and Amrit among them, which are unisex for a different reason: there, the Singh or Kaur that follows does the marking instead.
