Asher arrives already translated. In Genesis 30:13, when Zilpah bears Jacob a second son, Leah says "Happy am I" and names the boy Asher. The root behind it is the one in osher, happiness, and in ashrei, the "blessed is" that opens the book of Psalms. It is one of the few biblical names whose sense the text hands you outright instead of leaving it to philologists to argue over.
Asher's tribe drew the fertile coastal strip of western Galilee, and Jacob's deathbed blessing in Genesis 49:20 promises that his bread will be rich — an unusually comfortable inheritance among the twelve. Note too that the English surname Asher, from Old English æsc, an ash tree, is a separate word that happens to match; it has nothing to do with the Hebrew.
