History & meaning
There is a real question about whether Malachi is a name at all. The Hebrew mal'akh means messenger, and with the possessive ending Mal'akhi is “my messenger”, which is also, word for word, the opening of Malachi 3:1: I send my messenger. Many scholars read the heading of the book as a description of an anonymous prophet rather than a signature, and the Septuagint translators evidently thought the same, rendering the first verse as “by the hand of his messenger” instead of using a name. Whoever he was, the name he left behind is unambiguous in meaning even where it is ambiguous in status.
A second name shadows it. In Ireland, Malachy is an anglicisation of Máel Sechnaill, borne by two high kings and then by Saint Malachy of Armagh, who died in 1148 and was the first Irish saint formally canonised. The two names have nothing to do with each other etymologically; they collapsed into one spelling because the biblical form was the one English speakers recognised. American use is biblical rather than Irish, and it rose in the wake of the prophet names — Isaiah, Elijah, Micah, Ezekiel — that have dominated American boy naming for thirty years.
Why parents choose it
It is the prophet name that has not been used up. Elijah and Isaiah have both been in the top 100 for years; Malachi carries the same scriptural weight and the same long vowel finish without the classroom duplication. The nickname supply is unusually good for a three-syllable name, too: Mal for the traditionalists, Kai for everybody else.
