History & meaning
Split the name and it argues with you: yasha, to rescue, and Yah, the God of Israel. "Yahweh is salvation" is not a wish but a statement, and it is the same claim packed into Joshua and, through Greek, into Jesus. Prophetic names in this period were frequently short sermons, and Isaiah's is one of the plainest.
The prophet worked in Jerusalem in the second half of the eighth century BCE, close enough to the throne to advise kings during the Assyrian crisis. The book bearing his name runs to sixty-six chapters, and scholars generally read it as the work of more than one hand across two centuries. It is also the best-attested: the Great Isaiah Scroll recovered at Qumran in 1947 is a complete copy roughly a thousand years older than the medieval manuscripts scholars had before it. The name itself was rare in English until the Reformation put Hebrew into ordinary mouths, held a strong and continuous place in Black American families through the twentieth century, and is now broadly used across the country.
Why parents choose it
Sound, mostly. Isaiah rises in the middle and settles on an open vowel, which is why it carries so well when called across a yard. The -iah ending has become a category of its own, and within it Isaiah is the one that reads as a first name before it reads as scripture — recognisable to everybody, owned by no single tradition.

The NBA guard Isaiah Thomas shares that name exactly, and is perpetually confused with the Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas, who spells it a letter shorter.
