History & meaning
Igbo names divide neatly by what they are doing to the listener, and Kelechi is one of the few that gives an order. Chidi makes a statement, Ifeanyi asks a question with the answer built in, Chigozie expresses a wish; Kelechi tells you to thank God, and the person being told is whoever is saying the name. The verb kele is worth dwelling on, because it means both to thank and to greet. Igbo does not fully separate the two acts, and that is why the name sits comfortably between gratitude and praise: you are being told to acknowledge God, whether by thanks or by salutation. The longer Kelechukwu names the supreme God explicitly; Kelechi is the form nearly everyone uses.
The naming itself is a public event. In many Igbo communities the ceremony, igu aha, is held on the twenty-eighth day, when relatives gather, the child is presented and names are offered by more than one branch of the family, so that a child may leave with several. Time is counted on a four-day week — Eke, Orie, Afọ and Nkwọ — and the market day of birth is itself a source of names, which is where the surnames Okeke, Okorie, Okafor and Okonkwo come from, each meaning the boy born on that day. A thanksgiving name like Kelechi is exactly what such a gathering produces.
Why parents choose it
It is chosen after relief: a healthy delivery, a child who arrived late, a year that could have gone differently. It is also one of the few Igbo names an English speaker will reliably spell correctly after hearing it once, and it works for a son or a daughter without any adjustment.

Kelechi Iheanacho came through Manchester City's academy after being named best player at the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup, later scored the goals that took Leicester City to their FA Cup win in 2021, and has played throughout for Nigeria. Kelechi Nwakali captained the Nigeria side that won the 2015 U-17 World Cup and took the tournament's golden ball. The British actor and podcaster Kelechi Okafor is a well-known female bearer, which is a useful reminder of how the name works at home.
