Most of the well-known Igbo chi names are propositions. Chibueze asserts that God is king; Chidiebere asserts that God is merciful. Chigozie is not doing that. Gọzie is a verb, and the form it takes here is the one Igbo uses for wishes and requests, so the name is closer to a spoken blessing than to a claim about the world: may God bless. Parents are not describing the child, they are saying something over him. The same root gives ngozi, the noun for blessing, which is why Chigozie and Ngozi turn up so often in the same family tree.
That places Chigozie in a distinct and rather large class of Igbo names: the ones that petition rather than declare. Ozoemena, "may it not happen again", is given after a loss. Ndubuisi insists that life comes first. Chigozie Obioma is the strongest argument for the name in print. His first novel, The Fishermen (2015), was shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and so was his second, An Orchestra of Minorities (2019) — a book narrated throughout by the protagonist's chi, which makes its author's own name something close to a thesis statement.
