History & meaning
Irish has an adjective, cían, for things that are far away in time or space — ancient, distant, enduring. As a name it belongs to the mythological layer of Irish literature. Cian was the father of Lugh, the god of every skill at once, for whom the harvest festival Lughnasa is named. Cian's own story is short and grim: he is killed by the three sons of Tuireann, whose sentence is to fetch a list of impossible treasures from the ends of the earth. The tale is one of the trio Irish tradition calls the Three Sorrows of Storytelling, and it is the reason a name meaning "enduring" arrives with an elegy attached.
Modern Cian is not a revival so much as a habit. It climbed in Ireland from the 1980s and has stayed there, to the point where any given county hurling panel will have one — Limerick's Cian Lynch, twice named Hurler of the Year, and Ireland prop Cian Healy are the names Irish readers will already know. Outside Ireland the anglicised Kian carries most of the traffic, helped by Kian Egan of Westlife. Worth knowing: Kian is also, separately, a Persian name with no connection to the Irish one.
